Our History

Kyoto Trading was founded in 2015 to do one thing well: buy the best matcha of each season directly from the farmers who grow it. We built long-term partnerships with growers in Uji (Kyoto), Shizuoka, Nishio (Aichi) and Kagoshima — the same farms that supply us today.

Proven in Europe's toughest matcha market

Germany was our first export market, and one of the hardest. In 2018 we opened WAKABA, our own matcha specialty store, and grew it to three locations. Meeting EU organic and pesticide-residue standards, season after season, shaped the quality control we still apply to every batch. We now supply matcha across Germany and into the Netherlands, Austria and Poland.

A Japanese matcha supplier based in Australia

In 2024 we established Kyoto Trading Australia and opened a refrigerated warehouse in Melbourne, where all stock is held at 0°C. Australian businesses now buy the same grades as our European customers — without the four-to-ten-week lead time of importing from Japan. We supply cafés, bakeries, dessert shops, restaurants and food manufacturers nationwide, with sales support in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast.

FAQ

What is the relationship between AU MATCHA, WAKABA and Kyoto Trading?

Kyoto Trading is the parent company, founded in Kyoto in 2015. WAKABA is our retail brand, operating as matcha stores in Germany and as a packaged retail range in Australia. AU MATCHA is our Australian wholesale and retail brand, operated by Kyoto Trading Australia Pty Ltd (ABN 98 673 289 739).

Are you an importer or a reseller?

Neither, strictly. Our parent company in Kyoto procures and processes the tea itself, and our Australian entity imports it directly. There is no third-party trading house in between.

Do you sell to individuals, or only to businesses?

Both. Our 1kg bags are available to anyone through our online shop, and wholesale pricing applies from a 10kg minimum order.

Is your matcha organic certified?

Selected lines carry JAS, USDA and EU Organic certification. Because our German business operates under EU organic regulations, organic supply chains have been part of our operation since 2017.

Where is your Australian warehouse?

Unit 7, 16–18 Albert Street, Preston VIC 3072 — a refrigerated facility holding all stock at 0°C, dispatching Australia-wide.
